Mutfwang Targets International Sports, Tourism Hub as Stadium, Hotels Near Completion

By Comfort Pius, Jos

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to repositioning the state as a destination for international sporting events, tourism and investment through the ongoing remodelling of key legacy infrastructure.

The governor stated this on Thursday during an inspection of the remodelling projects at the Rwang Pam Township Stadium, Plateau Hotel and Hill Station Hotel in Jos.

Speaking after inspecting the projects, Mutfwang expressed satisfaction with the quality of work but directed contractors handling the Rwang Pam Township Stadium to accelerate construction to ensure its completion before the commencement of the next football season.

According to him, the upgraded stadium will meet international standards, provide a world-class sporting facility for athletes, promote grassroots sports development and position Plateau State to host both national and international sporting competitions

” The completion of this sporting facility will position Plateau State to host both national and international sporting events. That is why we insist that quality must never be compromised,” he said.

While commending the progress recorded so far, the governor urged the contractors to deploy additional manpower, particularly on the pitch, and make effective use of the August break to avoid delays caused by the rainy season.

“We need more hands on site, especially on the pitch. The contractor must take advantage of the August break so that the rains do not slow down the project. By the grace of God, before the football season begins in earnest, the pitch should be ready while work continues on other components,” he added.

Mutfwang said the stadium project forms part of his administration’s broader agenda to restore Plateau State’s rich sporting heritage and reposition the state as a leading centre for sports tourism and major competitions.

The governor also inspected the ongoing remodelling of the Plateau Hotel and Hill Station Hotel, where he commended investors and contractors for the significant progress recorded under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement.

He acknowledged that although the projects experienced initial setbacks, they have gained momentum through the collaboration between government and private investors.

“I am pleased with the quality of work going on here. We experienced a few challenges at the beginning, but these projects have demonstrated that Public-Private Partnerships can successfully deliver critical public infrastructure,” he said.

Mutfwang recalled that one of his administration’s major promises was to recover and restore Plateau State’s legacy assets, describing the redevelopment of the Hill Station Hotel as a significant milestone.

“Anyone familiar with Jos understands the historical significance of the Hill Station Hotel. It was once one of Nigeria’s flagship hospitality destinations but remained under lock and key for nearly eight years. Today, there is light at the end of the tunnel as serious reconstruction work is ongoing,” he stated.

He disclosed that investors had assured the government that the first phase of the Plateau Hotel and Hill Station Hotel projects would be delivered by October 1, 2026.

According to the governor, the completion of the facilities will strengthen Plateau State’s tourism sector, boost conference and business activities, create jobs and stimulate economic growth.

“No state can successfully develop tourism without modern hospitality infrastructure. These facilities will significantly enhance Plateau’s attractiveness for tourism, conferences, business and leisure,” he said.

Mutfwang further noted that the visible progress on the projects had renewed public confidence, with many residents expressing excitement at the transformation of the iconic facilities.

He added that the projects send a strong signal to both local and foreign investors that Plateau State is open for business and committed to creating an enabling environment for private sector investment.

The governor said his administration would continue to pursue strategic infrastructure development through private sector partnerships as part of efforts to build a resilient economy, improve the ease of doing business and expand employment opportunities.

On security, Mutfwang reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to tackling insecurity through sustained collaboration with security agencies and community stakeholders, expressing confidence that Plateau State would become safer and more prosperous.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Plateau Investment and Property Development Company (PIPC), Hon. Danlami Jelka, alongside investors and contractors, received the governor at the project sites and briefed him on the progress of the projects.
