Nigeria, North Korea Move to Strengthen 50-Year Bilateral Relations

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening its longstanding bilateral relations with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).

Ambassador Dunoma stated this when he received the DPRK Ambassador-designate to Nigeria, Jo Yong Sam, during a courtesy visit to the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.

The Permanent Secretary congratulated the Ambassador-designate on his appointment and assured him of the Ministry’s full support in the discharge of his diplomatic responsibilities.

He expressed confidence that the diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the DPRK, established in 1976, would continue to grow stronger, particularly as both countries mark the 50th anniversary of their bilateral ties.

Ambassador Dunoma acknowledged the DPRK’s consistent support for Nigeria’s candidatures in international organisations and reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to peaceful dialogue and diplomatic efforts aimed at promoting lasting peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.

He proposed the early resumption of cultural exchanges between both countries, including cooperation in film and the creative arts.

The Permanent Secretary also called for the convening of the fifth session of the Nigeria-DPRK Joint Commission in Pyongyang at a mutually agreed date.

He further proposed enhanced reciprocal cooperation, including the allocation of land for the construction of a permanent Nigerian Embassy in Pyongyang and increased employment opportunities for Nigerian nationals at the DPRK Embassy in Abuja.

In his remarks, Ambassador-designate Jo Yong Sam commended Nigeria’s leadership role in Africa and its growing influence in international affairs.

He also praised the economic reforms being implemented under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to strengthening relations between both countries.

The Ambassador-designate further reaffirmed the DPRK’s continued support for Nigeria’s aspirations in international organisations, including the country’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
