Adamawa Governor Fintiri Defects to APC, Dealing Major Blow to Atiku Abubakar’s Stronghold

Adamawa State Governor Umaru Fintiri has officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), significantly strengthening the ruling party’s presence in the state and delivering a major political setback to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Governor Fintiri announced his decision in a statewide broadcast on Friday, declaring that the move was made in the “developmental interest” of the people of Adamawa State. He revealed that his defection was not a personal decision alone, as all members of his cabinet, state lawmakers, and key officials of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state have also moved with him to the APC.

The mass defection effectively hands over Atiku Abubakar’s political home base to the APC and further consolidates the influence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s party in the North-East.

Political analysts say the development poses a serious challenge to Atiku Abubakar’s presidential ambition, with the next general election less than a year away. With Governor Fintiri now leading the APC structure in Adamawa, observers note that Atiku’s Alternative Democratic Coalition (ADC) lacks strong grassroots presence in the state.

The defection has reshaped Adamawa’s political landscape, turning the APC into a dominant force and raising fresh questions about the opposition’s strength ahead of the 2027 elections.
