African Military Games to Foster Unity Through Sports in Abuja 2024

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced a significant initiative to enhance cooperation among African armed forces through the power of sports.
This was revealed today by Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Abidemi Marquis, the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee for the 2nd Africa Military Games (AMGA) Abuja 2024, during a press briefing held at the DHQ Main Conference Room.
Marking a milestone 24 years after Kenya hosted the inaugural AMGA, this year’s event is scheduled to take place from November 5 to 18 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja. AVM Marquis, who also serves as the Director of Sport at the Defence Headquarters, emphasised that the games will feature 19 sporting events with participation from male and female athletes across all 54 African countries.
“The primary objective of these games is to reinforce the existing bonds among African nations, particularly within the military,” stated AVM Marquis. “The event will not only showcase athletic prowess but also promote unity and peace across the continent.”
The anticipated benefits for Nigeria include a significant boost to the economy, a surge in tourism, and numerous opportunities for infrastructural development and job creation.
“The games will serve as a platform to highlight Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage, demonstrate unity, and bring various positive aspects of our nation to the forefront,” added AVM Marquis.
Major General (Maj Gen) Abdullahi Maikano, President of the Organisation of Military Sports in Africa (OSMA), expressed his commitment to ensuring full participation from all African nations.
“Our goal is to bring peace to Africa through this event,” he declared. Maj. Gen. Maikano also mentioned that a comprehensive inspection of the Abuja facilities is scheduled for September 2024 to assess the readiness of the host city.
The press briefing saw attendance from high-ranking military officials, including Brigadier General AR Bello, Director of Physical Training, Army; Air Commodore Abanum, Director of Sports for the Nigerian Air Force; and Commander AO Sadiku, representing the Directorate of Sports of the Nigerian Navy. Members of the 2nd AMGA Abuja 2024 Organising Committee were also present.
With the stage set for a historic event, the 2nd Africa Military Games promise to be a landmark occasion, fostering unity, peace, and collaboration across the African continent through the spirit of sportsmanship.
