Breaking Barriers: Nigerian Army Appoints First Female Acting Director of Public Relations
By Matthew Eloyi
In a historic move, the Nigerian Army has appointed Lieutenant Colonel Anele Onyinyechi Appolonia as the Acting Director, Army Public Relations — marking the first time a woman has held the position.
Lt. Col. Anele, a seasoned officer from Direct Regular Course 15 and a member of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), takes over from Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, who has been redeployed to the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre. Her appointment becomes effective from April 22, 2025.
Prior to this groundbreaking elevation, Lt. Col. Anele completed a rigorous six-month strategic course at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre. Following the course, she was posted to the Department of Civil-Military Relations.
She had earlier served as Public Relations Officer in the Office of the Chief of Army Staff. Until her latest appointment, she was actively involved in civil-military engagements under the Department of Civil-Military Relations.
