Africa’s Development Dilemma: Kouyateh Warns of Ethnic, Religious Divides

By Ayshatu S. Rabo

Liberia’s Ambassador-at-Large, Sheikh Almoustapha Kouyateh, has issued a compelling warning about the persistent divisions undermining Africa’s development, stating that the continent’s deep-seated loyalties to ethnicity, religion, and geographic identity are derailing collective progress.

Speaking passionately on the continent’s future, Kouyateh emphasised that Africa cannot move forward as long as its people continue to prioritize tribal affiliations, religious beliefs, and linguistic identities over a shared national and continental purpose.

“How can a leader genuinely serve their nation when their first loyalty lies with their ethnic group or religious community?” he asked, underscoring the urgent need for leadership that transcends parochial identities.

Kouyateh’s remarks reflect a growing concern among African thinkers and development experts, who argue that the combination of ethnic and territorial identities—many of which predate colonial boundaries—has been compounded by artificial borders imposed during the post-colonial era. These divisions, often manipulated for political gain, have become entrenched challenges to continental cohesion and development.

Observers agree that overcoming these fault lines requires not only political will but also a reorientation of African identity—one that prioritizes unity, inclusive governance, and a shared vision of prosperity.

Kouyateh’s call is more than a critique; it is a challenge to African leaders and citizens alike to reimagine their loyalties and redefine what it means to serve and build a nation in the 21st century.
