The Aliko Dangote Foundation (ADF) has unveiled its National Rice Relief Programme, set to distribute over 1,000,000 10kg bags of rice across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas from March to early April 2024. This initiative aims to address the economic challenges faced by the nation and provide essential support to vulnerable communities.

According to a statement released by the foundation, the rice distribution programme will commence in Kano and Lagos States with flag-off ceremonies, before expanding to all other states and the Federal Capital Territory over the next two weeks.

During the flag-off ceremony in Kano State on Saturday, March 23, 2024, Chairman of Aliko Dangote Foundation, Aliko Dangote, highlighted the significance of compassion and solidarity, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan. He stated, “Our distribution of rice symbolises our commitment to upholding the values of compassion and solidarity that are at the core of our humanity.”

“We would be disbursing 120,000 bags of rice in Kano alone, with the assistance of the Kano Hisbah Board,” Mr. Dangote anniunced

The programme’s modalities involve collaboration with state and local governments, as well as community partners, to ensure the effective delivery of rice to vulnerable populations across the country, regardless of demographic or socio-political attributes.

In addition to rice distribution, the foundation will provide 10,000 iftar meals throughout the month of Ramadan in Kano Municipality. These efforts complement the foundation’s existing daily bread relief programme, which has been providing over 32,000 family-size loaves of bread daily in Kano and Lagos States since 2020, in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Beyond food relief programmes, the Dangote Group has been actively investing in food fortification across Nigeria’s food industry, including iodized salt and vitamin A fortified sugar, to address nutrition challenges.

Over the past decade, the Aliko Dangote Foundation has provided direct humanitarian relief and food aid in response to crises in Nigeria’s North-East and North-West regions. Its broader initiatives focus on nutrition, health, education, and economic empowerment, not only in Nigeria but also across Africa and globally.

Group Executive Director, Commercial, Fatima Aliko Dangote, affirmed the foundation’s commitment to supporting vulnerable Nigerians, stating, “This programme marks the latest nutrition and humanitarian intervention by the Foundation, continuing its tradition of impactful philanthropy.”

The foundation urges all Nigerians to support those in need and calls on governments to implement policies aimed at fostering economic growth, job creation, and poverty reduction, ultimately striving to build an inclusive and equitable society for all.
