Burkina Faso Approves 5.7 Billion FCFA for Defence, Security Equipment Upgrade

Burkina Faso has approved 5.7 billion FCFA for the procurement of new equipment to strengthen its defence and security forces, with funding drawn entirely from the 2026 national budget.

The investment package is aimed at enhancing the operational capacity of security agencies across multiple sectors, including the military, police, forestry services, and road safety units.

According to official details, the allocation will cover specialised military equipment, logistics support for units assigned to protect mining sites, upgraded resources for road safety operations, and new uniforms for police and forestry personnel nationwide.

Authorities say the initiative is part of broader efforts to reinforce state presence across the country, secure key economic assets such as mining operations, and improve mobility and coordination among security services.

Beyond counterterrorism operations, the investment is also intended to strengthen governance and territorial control, particularly in remote and high-risk areas where armed groups have been active.

Officials describe the move as a step toward consolidating national sovereignty and improving the state’s ability to deliver security and public services across all regions.

The development underscores ongoing security restructuring efforts in the Sahel, where governments continue to increase defence spending in response to persistent insurgent threats and instability.
