The Federal Government has described the launch of the International Media and Information Literacy Institute as a transformative milestone for Nigeria, Africa, and the global community in promoting responsible information use and strengthening democratic resilience.

Speaking at the close of the two-day official launch held at the National Open University of Nigeria in Abuja, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the establishment of the Institute positions Nigeria at the forefront of global efforts to advance media and information literacy in the digital age.

Represented by the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Press Council, Dili Ezughah, the Minister noted that the successful hosting of IMILI aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, particularly in promoting transparency, civic engagement, and inclusive development.

“This marks the beginning of a transformative journey, not just for Nigeria, but for Africa and the global community. IMILI is more than an institution; it is a platform for collaboration, innovation, and measurable impact in media and information literacy,” he said.

The Minister highlighted that deliberations during the launch, including goodwill messages and the presentation of IMILI’s Strategic Plan (2026–2030), have provided a clear roadmap for the Institute’s long-term vision, operations, and sustainability.

He explained that IMILI is designed as a global hub for research, capacity building, and policy dialogue, bringing together educators, journalists, policymakers, and young leaders to strengthen critical thinking and responsible engagement within the information ecosystem.

Emphasising the need for collaboration, the Minister underscored a whole-of-society approach involving government, academia, media, civil society, the private sector, and international partners such as UNESCO to tackle misinformation and disinformation.

“Media and information literacy is no longer optional in today’s world. The ability to verify information and engage responsibly is critical to building resilient societies and safeguarding democratic institutions,” he added.

Describing Nigeria’s hosting of the world’s first UNESCO Category 2 Institute dedicated to Media and Information Literacy as both a moment of national pride and global responsibility, the Minister urged stakeholders to promote truth, accountability, and ethical communication.

He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to working closely with partners to ensure that IMILI delivers measurable outcomes, calling on stakeholders to translate ideas from the launch into concrete actions that will strengthen unity and drive sustainable development.

The event brought together key stakeholders from government, academia, and the communications sector, including former Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed; Vice-Chancellor of NOUN, Uduma Oji Uduma; Director of IMILI, Sharon Omotosho; and President of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, Ike Neliaku, among other dignitaries.

The launch of IMILI is expected to play a critical role in shaping a more informed society, strengthening trust in institutions, and promoting responsible communication in an increasingly digital world.
