First Lady Highlights Women’s Role in National Development at Mega Empowerment Rally
Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has emphasised the critical role of women in shaping the nation’s future, noting that their population strength places them at the centre of national transformation.
She made this known on Tuesday at the National Women Mega Empowerment and Rally held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, where thousands of women gathered from across the country.
“Women represent over 50 percent of the population; therefore, we are uniquely positioned to influence change and contribute our quota in steering the nation towards a greater future,” she said.
The First Lady commended the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, for implementing empowerment initiatives aimed at improving women’s economic independence.
She explained that such programmes, which put resources directly in the hands of women, would enable them to make informed decisions and improve the well-being of families and communities. According to her, this aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which prioritises inclusion and ensures women have a voice in governance.
Reaffirming the administration’s commitment, the First Lady received the Women’s Charter for National Development and pledged to present it to the President, assuring that its objectives would be pursued.
In her address, the Minister described the rally as a turning point for women’s collective influence, highlighting the “Power of 10 Million Women” initiative as a coordinated national movement aimed at driving inclusion, leadership, and economic participation.
She noted that the charter outlines key priorities, including increased political representation, access to financing, economic opportunities, improved child welfare, and inclusive governance.
Also speaking, Wife of the Imo State Governor, Chioma Uzodimma, and Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, described the initiative as a strategic effort to unify women across the 774 local government areas, transforming their contributions into structured national impact.
The event also featured the symbolic distribution of empowerment items, including tricycles, power tillers, sewing machines, grinding machines, hair dryers, and freezers to women beneficiaries.
The rally served as a platform to reinforce women’s role not just as participants, but as key drivers of Nigeria’s development agenda.
