Governor Radda Inaugurates Climate Peace Hub to Boost Resilience, Livelihoods in Katsina
The Governor of Katsina State, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has inaugurated the Climate Peace Hub in Jibia Local Government Area, describing it as a transformative project aimed at strengthening peacebuilding, climate resilience, economic empowerment and sustainable livelihoods in vulnerable communities.
The facility was developed through a partnership between the Katsina State Government, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Government of Norway, with support from international development partners including the German Embassy and other stakeholders.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on Thursday, Governor Radda reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to practical investments that directly improve citizens’ welfare and promote inclusive development.
He said the Climate Peace Hub represents a new model of community development that integrates peacebuilding, climate adaptation, agriculture, technology and skills acquisition under one framework.
According to him, the initiative is designed to empower women and youths, strengthen peaceful coexistence, and create sustainable economic opportunities, particularly in communities affected by climate-related challenges and insecurity.
“The Climate Peace Hub is more than a physical structure; it is a symbol of hope and innovation,” the Governor said, noting that its facilities would equip residents with tools and knowledge to improve their livelihoods.
The hub features an automatic weather station, smart agriculture demonstration farms, conflict resolution centre, ICT laboratories, vocational training units and renewable energy systems. It is also designed to support aquaponics farming, livestock management and sustainable production systems.
Project officials explained that Nigeria’s first climate-focused weather station within the hub will provide real-time weather data to farmers and herders, helping to reduce climate-related conflicts and improve agricultural planning.
Vocational training programmes at the facility include tailoring, salon services, recycling, sustainable charcoal production and other income-generating skills aimed at empowering women, youths and internally displaced persons.
According to the Climate Peace Hub management, more than 100 women have already benefited from training programmes, while agricultural participants are reportedly generating steady daily income from cultivation activities.
During the event, Governor Radda met a young woman living with disability who had acquired skills through the programme and directed that she be considered for employment in the Katsina State Civil Service.
The Governor also commended development partners for their continued support, stressing that collaboration remains essential in addressing complex challenges related to climate change, security and economic development.
The inauguration of the Climate Peace Hub marks a significant step in Katsina State’s broader efforts to promote peace, resilience and inclusive growth across local communities.
