A distinguished senior officer of the Nigerian Army, Markus Ghinga Kangye (Rtd.), has been celebrated for his decades of meritorious service as he marked his retirement, homecoming, and turbaning as Myedala Ra Mwecaka.

The traditional title was conferred on the retired General by the Emir of Michika, Bulus Luka Gadiga, in a colourful ceremony attended by family members, community leaders, and well-wishers, who also welcomed him back home in honour of his distinguished military career.

Born on January 1, 1968, in Nkafamiya Village, Michika Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Kangye began his early education at Khouri-vi Primary School, Michika, before proceeding to Government Secondary School, Mubi, where he obtained his West African School Certificate.

His military journey began after gaining admission into the Nigerian Defence Academy as a member of the 39th Regular Course in 1987. He graduated in 1991 with a Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree and was commissioned into the Nigerian Army Corps of Artillery as a Second Lieutenant in 1992.

Throughout his illustrious career, Major General Kangye underwent extensive professional training, including artillery and infantry courses, as well as junior and senior staff courses at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji. He further enhanced his expertise internationally with the Elite Long Gunnery Staff Air Defence course in Koradu, Pakistan, in 2019.

The retired General held several key command, staff, and instructional appointments across the Nigerian Army. These included Director of Media Operations at Defence Headquarters, Commander Corps of Artillery (Chief Vulcan), Chief of Civil-Military Affairs (Army), and Senior Research Fellow at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Abuja. He also served as Director of Military Training and Cadets Brigade Commander at the Nigerian Defence Academy, as well as Deputy Commander and Chief Instructor at the Nigerian Army School of Artillery.

Kangye’s service spanned major military formations including Defence Headquarters, Army Headquarters, and various artillery regiments and brigades, rising steadily through the ranks to the position of Major General.

In recognition of his exceptional service, he received numerous honours and decorations, including the Grand Service Star (GSS), Distinguished Service Star (DSS), General Staff Medal of Honour (GSMH), Corps Medal of Honour (CMH), and Field Command Medal (FCM), among others.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, he is known for his intellectual interests and recreational pursuits, including documentaries, educational programming, tennis, chess, and squash.

Major General Kangye is married to Helen Markus Kangye, and their union is blessed with children, including a set of twins.

The retirement and traditional title conferment mark the culmination of a remarkable career defined by discipline, leadership, and unwavering service to the nation, earning him admiration within military and civilian circles alike.
