The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI), Engr. Prof. Samson Duna, has commissioned and handed over six solar-powered boreholes to rural communities in Gombe South as part of efforts to improve access to clean water and promote sustainable development.

The benefiting communities include Swa in Balanga Local Government Area, Kalarin in Kaltungo LGA, Filiya, Pero Chonge and Iapan in Shongom LGA, Baule Kaltin in Tula, Balanga LGA, and Tal in Billiri LGA.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by the member representing Billiri/Balanga Federal Constituency, Hon. Ali JC; the member representing Kaltungo/Shongom Federal Constituency, Hon. Dr. Obed Shehu; district heads of the benefiting communities, traditional rulers and other community leaders.

Residents described the projects as timely and life-changing, noting that the communities had faced challenges accessing potable water for many years.

They expressed appreciation to Prof. Duna and the management of NBRRI for the intervention, adding that several other infrastructural projects being implemented by the institute are already making a positive impact across Gombe South.

In recognition of his contributions to community development, two traditional titles were conferred on the NBRRI Director-General.

The District Head of Filiya, Alhaji Engr. Ibrahim Shuaibu, honoured him with the title “Ankholon Filiya,” while the Swa community conferred on him the title “Wakilin Wajen Swa.”

Responding, Prof. Duna thanked the communities for the honours and pledged to remain a worthy ambassador of the titles.

He urged residents to take ownership of the projects by ensuring proper maintenance of the solar-powered boreholes so they can continue to provide clean water for years to come.

The lawmakers representing the affected federal constituencies commended the NBRRI Director-General for implementing people-centred projects aimed at improving the welfare of rural communities and pledged continued collaboration with the institute to support development initiatives across Gombe South.

The solar-powered boreholes form part of NBRRI’s efforts to promote sustainable rural development through science, technology and infrastructure.
