Nigeria, Mauritania Reaffirm Commitment to Stronger Bilateral Ties
Nigeria and Mauritania have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation on issues of regional and continental importance.
This was highlighted on Friday, June 19, 2026, when Mauritania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Mauritanians Abroad, Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, paid a visit to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja as Special Envoy of Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani.
The Special Envoy was received on behalf of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dunoma Umar Ahmed.
During the meeting, Merzoug conveyed the warm greetings and best wishes of President Ghazouani to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and reaffirmed Mauritania’s commitment to deepening the longstanding relationship between both countries.
He stressed the importance of stronger collaboration among African nations in addressing contemporary challenges, including climate change, sustainable development, regional peace and security, and economic growth.
The Mauritanian envoy also called for enhanced bilateral and multilateral engagement between Nigeria and Mauritania and sought Nigeria’s support for Mauritania’s candidature for the position of Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.
Responding, Ambassador Dunoma welcomed the envoy and his delegation to Abuja and conveyed the goodwill of President Tinubu.
He explained that although the President was unable to personally receive the delegation due to official engagements, the message from President Ghazouani would be duly delivered to him.
The Permanent Secretary acknowledged the strong and cordial relations that have existed between Nigeria and Mauritania over the years and emphasised the need to expand cooperation in response to emerging regional and global developments.
He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to working closely with Mauritania in promoting peace, security, stability, economic prosperity and sustainable development across Africa.
The meeting underscored the shared determination of both countries to strengthen diplomatic ties and advance mutual interests within regional and international platforms.
