By Matthew Eloyi
Nigeria’s rehabilitation sector received a major technological boost on Friday as the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and its Japanese partners donated advanced 3D prosthetic equipment to the Medical Rehabilitation Therapists Board (MRTB) in Abuja.
The donation, unveiled during a high-level ceremony at the MRTB headquarters, is expected to strengthen prosthetics and orthotics practice, improve rehabilitation services and expand the use of digital healthcare technology across the country.
The event also featured the presentation of a newly developed 3D-Printed Transtibial Socket to the Registrar of the Board, highlighting Nigeria’s growing capacity in digital manufacturing and innovative prosthetic solutions.
Speaking during the ceremony, the Registrar of MRTB, Prof. Rufai Ahmad, described the project as a landmark achievement in the development of rehabilitation technology and professional training in Nigeria.
“This project will enhance rehabilitation technology and strengthen the capacity of professionals in prosthetics and orthotics practice across the country,” Ahmad said, noting that it would further improve healthcare delivery nationwide.

He added that the equipment would support training, research and service delivery within the rehabilitation and healthcare sectors, while reaffirming the Board’s commitment to ensuring the sustainability of the initiative.
Also speaking, Mr. Philbert Johnson, Director and UNIDO Country Representative in Nigeria and ECOWAS, said the project demonstrated the organisation’s commitment to supporting vulnerable populations through improved rehabilitation services.
“It is a pleasure to be part of this project which will contribute immensely to strengthening rehabilitation services in Nigeria,” Johnson said while highlighting the programme’s expected impact on healthcare delivery nationwide.
Pakouyowou said the collaboration reflected a shared commitment to innovation and improved rehabilitation services, stressing the importance of partnerships in advancing healthcare technology and professional capacity development in Nigeria.
Following the handover ceremony, members of the delegation toured the facility to assess ongoing activities and inspect technological advancements at the centre, as part of broader efforts to promote innovation and improve rehabilitation services nationwide.
