Nigeria Submits Bid to Host Formula 1 Grand Prix in Abuja
Nigeria has officially submitted a bid to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix in Abuja, a move that could bring the world’s premier motorsport competition to the country for the first time.
If successful, the event would mark the first Formula 1 race ever held in Nigeria and the first F1 Grand Prix on African soil in more than three decades.
As part of the proposal, plans have been outlined for the development of a world-class motorsport complex in Abuja, including a purpose-built Formula 1 circuit, a karting track, hotels, and a motorsport museum aimed at promoting racing culture and tourism.
The bid is expected to form part of Nigeria’s broader efforts to position itself as a destination for major international sporting events and attract investment into sports, tourism, and infrastructure development.
Organisers have reportedly invited Formula 1 President and CEO, Stefano Domenicali, seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, and leading circuit designers to conduct site visits and assess the proposed facilities.
The development comes amid growing discussions within Formula 1 about a potential return to Africa, the only inhabited continent currently without a race on the championship calendar.
Should the bid receive approval, Nigeria would join a select group of countries hosting Formula 1 events and potentially open a new chapter for motorsport development across Africa.
