The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has welcomed the implementation of a Supreme Court judgment by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which it says has led to the update of the party’s leadership information on the commission’s official portal.

In a statement issued by the SDP National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, the party said INEC has uploaded the name of Professor Abubakar Sadiq Umar Gombe as the party’s National Chairman, replacing Shehu Musa Gabam.

According to the statement, the name of the former national chairman had earlier been restored on INEC’s portal following a Court of Appeal judgment. However, the party maintained that the latest action by the electoral body was in compliance with the Supreme Court’s ruling on the matter.

The SDP further stated that INEC had removed the names of the former chairman and other expelled members from its records as of Wednesday, June 17, 2026.

The party described the development as a significant step toward resolving what it termed externally induced leadership challenges that had affected its internal affairs.

It added that the implementation of the judgment has laid to rest lingering disputes over the party’s leadership structure, paving the way for greater unity and stability within the SDP.

The statement expressed optimism that the party is now better positioned to strengthen its structures nationwide and prepare effectively for the 2027 general elections.

The SDP reaffirmed its commitment to internal democracy, party discipline, and providing a credible political platform for Nigerians ahead of future electoral contests.
