Ramos, who had suffered severe spinal injuries leaving her paralyzed and in chronic pain, requested assisted dying under Spain’s euthanasia law. She cited both ongoing physical suffering and psychological trauma from past sexual assaults, including abuse by an ex-boyfriend and a gang assault at a state-supervised facility for vulnerable youth in 2022.
Her father contested the request in court, arguing that Ramos was mentally vulnerable and needed protection. However, judges ruled in her favor, affirming her right to choose assisted euthanasia.
The case has drawn significant attention to Spain’s euthanasia legislation and the rights of individuals facing severe physical and mental suffering.
