Tanzania has denied entry to a delegation from the European Parliament that was expected to investigate alleged election violence and human rights abuses linked to the country’s 2025 general elections.

According to reports, Tanzanian authorities halted the planned visit after several postponements and delays, stating that the government needed to conclude its own internal investigation into incidents of election-related violence before allowing the delegation into the country.

Although Tanzania’s national inquiry was reportedly completed in April 2026, officials have yet to announce new dates for the European delegation’s visit.

The EU mission was expected to examine allegations of human rights violations and electoral irregularities arising from the 2025 polls.

The delegation also planned to assess projects funded by the European Union and hold meetings with civil society organisations, legal institutions, and regional bodies, including the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

The development has drawn attention to growing concerns over transparency, democratic accountability, and relations between Tanzania and international partners monitoring governance and human rights issues.
