Anambra State Government Apprehends Woman for Attempting to Sell Sons

By Matthew Eloyi

The Anambra State Government, acting through the Ministry of Women and Social Welfare, has arrested a 38-year-old woman identified as Chinyere Chukwu for allegedly trying to sell her two sons.

Chukwu, a resident of Okija in the Ihiala Local Government Area of the state, reportedly collaborated with her 17-year-old daughter, Joy, in the attempt to sell off her sons, citing “economic hardship in the country” as the reason.

During interrogation, Chukwu confessed, “I have 11 kids and when I could not cater to them, I decided to sell two of them.” She further explained that her decision stemmed from her inability to provide for her large family.

The Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, along with security operatives, apprehended the suspects after posing as buyers for the children upon receiving information about the transaction.

Chukwu revealed, “Since they are boys, the prices were kept at N1 million each but after serious bargaining by the commissioner, who posed as the buyer, we decided to sell them at N1.8 million, instead of the initial N2 million.” She admitted that witnessing her neighbour’s successful sale of a child inspired her to venture into the business.

Joy, the eldest of Chukwu’s 11 children at 17 years old, disclosed that the plan was to utilize the proceeds from the sale to further her tertiary education.

In response to the incident, Obinabo ordered that the remaining children of the suspect be placed under the custody of the state government for proper care. She also pledged to apprehend the neighbour who had sold off her own child, emphasizing the government’s commitment to eradicating such crimes.

Furthermore, Obinabo directed the tracing and retrieval of the sold child once the neighbour was apprehended. She assured the public of the state government’s determination to tackle criminal activities and warned that perpetrators would face police prosecution.
