Arsenal Face Scrutiny After Carabao Cup Final Defeat to Manchester City
Arsenal are facing renewed scrutiny over their style of play following a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium.
Manager Mikel Arteta saw his side struggle, particularly in the second half, as their pursuit of multiple trophies suffered a setback with the loss. Questions have once again emerged over Arsenal’s attacking effectiveness in crucial matches.
Despite the defeat, the Gunners remain in a strong position domestically, holding a nine-point lead in the Premier League standings. They are also preparing for a favourable UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash against Sporting CP, alongside an upcoming FA Cup quarter-final away fixture against Southampton.
Former England international Chris Waddle has questioned reports linking Arsenal with a move for Sandro Tonali, suggesting the midfielder’s style closely mirrors that of Declan Rice.
“They’ve got Declan Rice and other strong midfield options. Do Arsenal really need another player like that?” Waddle asked, while acknowledging Tonali’s quality and growing interest from top clubs.
Meanwhile, former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes attributed Bukayo Saka’s dip in form to Arsenal’s tactical approach. He argued that the team has struggled to supply its attacking players with quality possession in dangerous areas.
Scholes noted that Saka, widely regarded as one of Arsenal’s key players, has looked less effective this season due to the team’s build-up play, rather than a lack of ability.
As the season enters a decisive phase, Arsenal will need to regroup quickly to ensure their title ambitions and cup campaigns remain on track despite growing criticism of their playing style.
