For nearly four decades, Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo carved a path through the ranks of the Nigerian Navy, building a reputation defined by discipline, intelligence, and strategic leadership. Today, even in retirement, his name continues to resonate within Nigeria’s security and political landscape.

Born on April 22, 1966, in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, Gambo’s journey began with humble roots. His early education at Gwagwarwa Special Primary School and Rumfa College laid the foundation for a career that would later span some of the most sensitive areas of national defence.

In 1984, he took a decisive step by enrolling in the Nigerian Defence Academy, joining the 36th Regular Course. There, he earned a degree in Economics before furthering his academic pursuits with advanced degrees in Transport Management from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology—a blend of military discipline and intellectual depth that would shape his leadership style.

Commissioned as a Sub-Lieutenant in 1988, Gambo specialised in underwater warfare and intelligence—fields that demand precision, patience, and strategic foresight. Over the years, he held key appointments, including Director of Naval Intelligence and Director of Procurement at the Defence Space Administration. His role as Nigeria’s pioneer Defence Attaché to Angola further underscored his international exposure and diplomatic experience.

His career reached its peak in 2021 when former President Muhammadu Buhari appointed him as the 23rd Chief of Naval Staff. At a time when maritime insecurity posed significant threats, Gambo’s tenure was marked by efforts to combat piracy in the Gulf of Guinea and modernise the Navy’s fleet. Under his leadership, Nigeria strengthened its presence in regional waters, reinforcing its role in maritime security.

Decorated with national honours such as the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR), alongside several military medals, Gambo’s service record reflects years of commitment to national duty, including participation in peacekeeping missions in Liberia.

Yet, retirement has not placed him outside the public eye. In recent months, Gambo has been drawn into a high-profile dispute with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over a land matter in Abuja. The controversy, which escalated into a public confrontation, has sparked debate about authority, property rights, and the intersection of military influence and civil governance.

Still, beyond the headlines, Gambo’s story remains one of long-standing service and national contribution. From the depths of naval operations to the complexities of public discourse, his journey reflects the evolving role of military leaders in Nigeria’s broader national narrative.
