The Association of Women With Disabilities Initiative (AWWDI) has hosted a transformative One-Day Intensive Leadership and Advocacy Workshop for women and girls with disabilities in Bwari Area Council, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja—an event designed to strengthen participants’ confidence, visibility, and leadership capacity.
Supported by the African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF), the workshop equipped participants with practical knowledge on leadership, disability rights, emotional intelligence, communication skills, and community engagement.
Facilitator Dr. Kolawole Jayeoba set the tone for the day, reminding participants that leadership begins from within.
“Leadership is influence, and influence begins when you speak for yourself,” he told the women, encouraging them to embrace their voices as powerful tools for change.
The session was marked by several inspiring moments, including an emotional reflection from one participant who said:
“Silence has never served us; our voices are tools, not burdens.”
Through group activities and interactive discussions, participants identified barriers affecting women and girls with disabilities—such as stigma, poor access to education, discrimination, and infrastructural inaccessibility—and proposed community-driven solutions to address them. The atmosphere was charged with determination and shared purpose, reinforcing a collective truth echoed throughout the event:
“When women with disabilities lead, communities change.”
The workshop marks another milestone in AWWDI’s ongoing mission to build strong, inclusive leadership pipelines for women with disabilities across Nigeria.
