The prestigious award, presented annually by France Football, recognises the best player in world football based on individual brilliance and team achievements.

Last year, Ousmane Dembélé of Paris Saint-Germain claimed the 2025 Ballon d’Or following an impressive season in France.

As the current campaign progresses, several players have emerged as strong contenders for the 2026 honour.

Leading the list is Harry Kane, the prolific striker of Bayern Munich. The England captain has been in exceptional form, scoring 45 goals and providing five assists in 37 matches across competitions. Kane has already helped Bayern secure the German Super Cup and is on track to win the Bundesliga title.

Second on the list is Kylian Mbappé of Real Madrid. The French superstar has scored 38 goals and recorded six assists in 33 appearances this season. Mbappé could further strengthen his chances if he leads Real Madrid to victories in La Liga and the UEFA Champions League, while also starring for France at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Lamine Yamal, the teenage sensation from FC Barcelona, currently sits third among the favourites. The Spanish international, who finished runner-up last year, has continued his rapid rise with 19 goals and 15 assists in 36 matches, helping Barcelona win the Supercopa de España and remain in the race for the La Liga title.

Another Bayern Munich star, Michael Olise, has also entered the Ballon d’Or conversation after a sensational season. The former Crystal Palace winger has produced 13 goals and 25 assists in 36 matches and has become an important player for the French national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Rounding out the top five contenders is Erling Haaland of Manchester City. The Norwegian striker continues to dominate under coach Pep Guardiola, scoring 29 goals and registering seven assists in 39 appearances across all competitions.

Haaland previously came close to winning the Ballon d’Or in 2023, finishing behind football legend Lionel Messi. As the season progresses, the race for the 2026 award is expected to become even more competitive.
