Cave Diver Agnes Milowka Dies Weeks After Doubling in Sanctum

Australian cave diver Agnes Milowka, who worked as a stunt and dive double on the 2011 film Sanctum, died in a cave-diving accident in South Australia just weeks after the movie was released.

Milowka, 29, was an experienced technical diver and underwater explorer who worked on Sanctum, produced by James Cameron, as a dive double for the character Judes and as a cave-diving instructor for the film’s actors.

In the film, Judes dies after becoming trapped during a dangerous underwater cave passage. The sequence involved the character leaving a spare air tank behind in order to squeeze through a tight restriction.

On February 27, 2011, Milowka was exploring Tank Cave near Mount Gambier in South Australia when she became separated from her diving buddy while attempting to negotiate a narrow passage. Reports said she entered the restriction alone and ran out of air.

Her death bore a striking resemblance to the fictional sequence she had helped create. According to reports about the accident, Milowka had left a spare tank behind to enable her to pass through the tight section, before she was unable to return.

Her body was found approximately 600 metres from the cave entrance in Tank Cave, part of an extensive underwater system stretching for about eight kilometres. Fellow members of the cave-diving community later undertook the difficult recovery operation.

Milowka was widely regarded within the Australian diving community as a highly accomplished cave explorer. She had explored cave systems in Australia and the United States, worked in underwater photography and maritime archaeology, and participated in major exploration projects.

Her death came only weeks after Sanctum reached cinemas, creating a tragic connection between the dangers depicted in the film and the real-life accident that claimed the life of one of the divers who helped bring its underwater scenes to life.
