The 2025 Abuja Military Barracks Youth Sports Championship came to a colourful end at Mogadishu Cantonment, with the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, reiterating the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to youth empowerment, discipline, and unity through sports.
The four-day sporting fiesta brought together energetic young men and women drawn from military barracks and formations across the Federal Capital Territory, competing in football, basketball, and volleyball. More than a contest, the championship served as a platform for nurturing future sports stars while instilling values of teamwork, resilience, and discipline.
Represented by Air Vice Marshal Nkem Aguyi, Group Managing Director of Defence Holdings Company Ltd, General Musa applauded the athletes for their enthusiasm and sportsmanship. He described the tournament as a resounding success, noting that it had achieved its objectives of keeping youths productively engaged and creating opportunities for professional careers.
“This championship has not only kept our youths focused and active but also opened doors for them to pursue professional sports careers. With scouts and coaches in attendance, I believe some of the talents displayed here will go on to make Nigeria proud both nationally and internationally,” the CDS stated.
“Most importantly, it has strengthened the bond within our barracks communities and reinforced the values of unity, discipline, and resilience,” he added.
General Musa further pledged the military’s continued support for initiatives that foster peace and development, stressing that sports remain a vital tool for uniting people of diverse backgrounds.
Now in its fourth edition, the championship has become institutionalised by Defence Headquarters. Over the years, similar initiatives such as the Democracy Day Basketball Competitions and the Kaduna Peace and Reconciliation Football Tournament have underscored the Armed Forces’ commitment to using sports as an instrument of integration, discipline, and community building.
Speaking on behalf of the athletes, Master Nisi Michael expressed deep appreciation to the CDS for his steadfast support. He also thanked organisers, parents, and officials for their contributions, saying: “Whether we won or lost, we are all champions because we competed together, learned together, and grew stronger as one family.”
The grand finale was marked by thrilling matches, lively cheers from families and officers, and the presentation of medals and trophies to outstanding athletes and teams.
The championship once again highlighted the Armed Forces’ resolve to balance operational readiness with initiatives that inspire hope, build character, and unite Nigerian youths.
