A Nigerian chemistry graduate, Zainab Bilyamin, has attracted attention for developing an innovative way to convert discarded sachet-water plastics into usable fuel.
While studying Chemistry at the Federal University Dutse, Zainab used her final-year research project to explore a practical solution to Nigeria’s growing plastic-waste challenge.
Her research involved converting discarded sachet-water plastics into a hybrid fuel with properties similar to kerosene and diesel through a process known as thermal cracking.
In the process, the plastic waste was heated to high temperatures in the absence of oxygen, breaking it down into smaller hydrocarbon molecules that can be converted into fuel.
The resulting product was successfully tested by using it to light a kerosene lamp and power a pumping machine, demonstrating its potential for practical applications.
Zainab said her interest in the research was inspired by the large quantities of plastic waste accumulating in communities across Nigeria. Rather than viewing the waste solely as an environmental problem, she sought to explore how it could be transformed into a useful energy resource.
Her work highlights the potential of scientific research and innovation to address environmental challenges while exploring alternative sources of energy.
Zainab has also expressed interest in pursuing postgraduate studies to further develop the research and explore its wider applications.
The project represents a promising example of how young Nigerian scientists are using education, creativity and research to develop locally relevant solutions to pressing environmental and energy challenges.
