Chinese Investment Expands Across Africa as Angola Secures $900 Million Port Project

Chinese companies are strengthening their economic presence across Africa through major investments in transport infrastructure, ports and industrial development, reinforcing growing economic cooperation between China and African nations.

In a significant development, Angola has secured a $900 million privately funded Chinese investment for the construction and operation of the Barra do Dande Port Terminal in Bengo Province.

Under the agreement, the new deep-sea port terminal will be operated for 25 years, with the project expected to enhance Angola’s logistics capacity, facilitate international trade and support the country’s long-term industrialisation agenda.

Once fully operational, the port is projected to generate more than $10 billion in commercial turnover, while boosting industrial exports, creating employment opportunities and improving Angola’s position as a regional maritime and trade hub.

The investment forms part of a broader wave of Chinese-backed infrastructure and industrial projects currently taking shape across Africa.

These include major airport expansion projects in Kenya and the development of a large-scale battery manufacturing plant in Morocco, highlighting China’s evolving investment strategy focused on infrastructure, manufacturing and value-chain development across the continent.

Analysts say the growing investments reflect deepening economic ties between China and Africa, with many countries leveraging foreign direct investment to modernise infrastructure, stimulate industrial growth and accelerate economic diversification.

The projects are also expected to strengthen regional trade, improve connectivity and contribute to Africa’s broader economic transformation efforts under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) framework.
