CIBN, NJI to raise awareness for judicial officers on banking contemporary issues

The Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) has called for joint knowledge events to educate all cadres of Judicial Officers in the country on developments and trending issues in the banking and finance sector in the country.

The President/Chairman of Council, CIBN, Dr Bayo Olugbemi, made the call when he was received in audience by the Administrator of the National Judicial Institute (NJI), Justice Salisu Garba Abdullahi in Abuja.

The CIBN President, said that the essence of the visit was to discuss how The Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria can deepen the existing collaboration by sustaining the National Seminar on Banking & Allied Matters for Judges in view of the enormous benefits that has been derived from the programme in the past as well as more that are inherent in the programme.

Olugbemi explained the CIBN’s readiness to collaborate and generate research projects with the National Judicial Institute on topical and relevant issues in the banking and finance industry.

The CIBN President further besought the support of the Institute for the proposed amendment of the CIBN Act of 2007, to enhance the power of the disciplinary tribunal to discipline erring bankers, among others.

While welcoming the CIBN Team, the Administrator, NJI, Justice Salisu Garba Abdullahi, expressed his appreciation for the CIBN Leadership and commended the Institute as a long-standing relationship partner commenced collaborating and organizing a workshop together which began in 2001.

Justice Abdullahi applauded the Institute for the just concluded successful 14th Annual Banking and Finance Conference and assured the Institute that NJI will not relent in the pursuit of capacity building for Judicial Officers in line with the existing relationship and the mandate we have under our enabling laws.

Justice Abdullahi continued that the collaborative workshops that the Chartered Institute of Bankers and the National Judicial Institute are organizing yearly help in ensuring effective administration of Justice in Nigeria.

“The efficiency with which Banking and Allied matters are determined in our Courts will no doubt lead to the stability of the socio-economic sector of Nigeria, adding that ‘we must continue to identify ways that will improve the capacity of Judicial Officers and support staff in line with global best practices,” he said.

Speaking further, he promised the CIBN of the Institute’s readiness to collaborate with the CIBN on any research project and relevant issues in banking operation in the country.

He gave his assurance to continually support the Institute’s leadership and be more active and committed to the Institute’s activities, programmes and events.
