COAS Pays Condolence Visit to Widow of Late Lieutenant General Garba Duba

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, paid a heartfelt condolence visit to Hajiya Rabi Garba Duba, the widow of the late Lieutenant General Garba Duba, who passed away on May 17, 2024, at his residence in Abuja.

Accompanied by senior officials of the Nigerian Army (NA), General Lagbaja visited the bereaved family on May 20, 2024, to offer his sympathies and support to Hajiya Rabi Garba Duba and other family members.

During the visit, the COAS expressed deep sorrow over the passing of General Duba, describing it as a profound loss not only to the NA but also to the entire Armed Forces of Nigeria and the nation. He praised the late General’s virtues, highlighting his role as a torchbearer, disciplinarian, mentor, and leader who significantly influenced the careers of many top military officers during his tenure as Commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy.

General Lagbaja emphasized that General Duba’s contributions to the NA and the nation’s defense would remain a lasting legacy within the military institution. He assured the family of the NA’s unwavering support during this difficult time and in the future.

In response, Mohammed Sani Duba, the first son of the late Lieutenant General, expressed gratitude to the COAS and the entire NA for their timely condolence visit and enduring support. He acknowledged that the NA had consistently stood by his father throughout his life and at his passing.

Lieutenant General Garba Duba, who passed away on May 17, 2024, after a brief illness, had a distinguished military career. He held several key positions, including General Officer Commanding 3 Division, Commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy, and Chief of Training and Operations at the Defence Headquarters. Additionally, he served as Governor of Bauchi State from 1978 to 1979 under General Olusegun Obasanjo’s regime and as Administrator of Sokoto State from January 1984 to August 1985 during Major General Muhammadu Buhari’s military government.
