COAS Presents Insurance Cheques to Families of Fallen Soldiers, Wounded Troops at Army Conference

The Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu, has presented Nigerian Army Personnel Insurance Cheques to families of fallen soldiers and troops wounded in action during the opening ceremony of the 2026 First Bi-Annual Conference of the Nigerian Army in Abuja.

The emotional ceremony, held at the Nigerian Army Conference Centre and Suites, highlighted the Nigerian Army’s commitment to honouring personnel who sacrificed their lives and supporting wounded troops injured in the line of duty.

Declaring the conference open, Lieutenant General Shaibu said the trust and support of Nigerians remain critical to achieving lasting peace and operational success across the country.

He described the conference as an important platform for reviewing ongoing military operations, assessing progress made in the first half of 2026, and developing new strategies to tackle emerging security threats.

According to the Army Chief, discussions during the conference will focus on operational readiness, evolving security challenges, and measures aimed at improving effectiveness across all operational theatres.

The COAS commended officers and soldiers for their resilience, professionalism, and bravery in confronting insecurity across the country, while paying tribute to fallen heroes who died defending Nigeria’s unity and peace.

Reaffirming his “Soldier First Concept,” Shaibu stressed that troop welfare, morale, training, and empowerment remain central to maintaining combat effectiveness within the Nigerian Army.

He urged commanders at all levels to maintain close engagement with personnel in order to sustain morale and operational readiness.

The Army Chief also disclosed that the Nigerian Army is expanding its operational footprint through the establishment of new formations nationwide, increased recruitment, improved infrastructure, upgraded healthcare services, and enhanced welfare packages for troops.

He noted that prompt medical evacuation arrangements for wounded personnel, both within and outside Nigeria, remain a key aspect of the Army’s welfare policy.

Lieutenant General Shaibu further emphasised the importance of strengthening civil-military relations, describing public support as a vital force multiplier in ongoing operations against insurgency, banditry, and other security threats.

He expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting the military through the acquisition of modern equipment, refurbishment of operational platforms, and efforts to improve operational capabilities.

Earlier in his remarks, the Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), Bamidele Alabi, said the conference would help consolidate operational gains and provide strategic direction for the remainder of the year.

He commended troops for their dedication in counter-insurgency and anti-banditry operations across the country and urged participants to contribute meaningfully to discussions aimed at strengthening national security.
