Dangote Cement Plc, a leading player in Nigeria’s industrial landscape, has clinched the prestigious 2023 NatureNews Environmental Sustainability Award. The accolade was bestowed upon the company during the 3rd Anniversary Lecture of NatureNews and the presentation of the Hero of Environmental Actions for Development (HEAD) at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre.

Themed around “Climate Change and Energy Transition in Nigeria,” the 3rd anniversary event celebrated Dangote Cement’s unwavering commitment to sustainable practices and its role in setting industry benchmarks for responsible production.
Mr. Aliyu Akoshile, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of NatureNews, highlighted the rigorous selection process that led to Dangote Cement’s nomination. The company’s deployment of cutting-edge technology to mitigate Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and its broader focus on environmental protection and regeneration, including land reclamation and tree planting, impressed the panel of eminent professionals.
“Climate Change remains a pressing threat to our environment and life itself,” emphasised Akoshile.
During the event, Mr. Lamin Barrow, Director General of the Nigeria Country Office, African Development Bank Group, underscored Nigeria’s commitment to a net-zero transition by 2060. The 30:30:30 principle—aiming for 30,000 MW of generated power capacity by 2030, with 30% from renewable energy—remains central to this just energy transition.
In response, Mr. Anthony Chiejina, Dangote Group Chief Branding and Communication Officer, expressed gratitude for the award. He highlighted the company’s innovative strategies in reducing Greenhouse Gas emissions through its decarbonisation strategy.
Dangote Cement’s recognition underscores its pivotal role in fostering sustainability, championing eco-conscious practices, and contributing to a greener future for Nigeria.
