In response to the recent visit of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) officials to the Dangote Group’s headquarters in Lagos on January 4, 2024, Aliko Dangote has issued a public statement to address concerns and provide a factual account of the events.

The statement outlines that the Dangote Group received a letter on December 6, 2023, requesting details of all foreign exchange allocations from the Central Bank of Nigeria from 2014 to the present. Similar letters were sent to 51 other groups of companies. The Dangote Group responded, seeking clarification on the specific subsidiaries or companies within the group for which information was required. They also requested additional time to compile the extensive documentation spanning ten years.

Despite their commitment to providing the information in batches, the EFCC allegedly did not provide the sought clarification and insisted on receiving the complete set of documents within a limited timeframe.

The Dangote Group assured the EFCC of its commitment to cooperating and delivering the requested information.

On January 4, 2024, the Dangote Group delivered the first batch of documents to the EFCC. However, the EFCC officers reportedly refused to accept the documents, insisting on visiting the company’s offices to collect them directly. The statement emphasises that, during the EFCC’s visit, no documents or files were taken from the Dangote Group’s head office.

The Dangote Group underscores that, to their knowledge, no accusations of wrongdoing have been made against any company within the group. They are currently responding to a request for information to assist the EFCC in its ongoing investigation.

“As a law-abiding corporate citizen, the Dangote Group remains committed to providing the EFCC with all necessary information and cooperation. The first batch of documents has already been delivered, and the group is actively working to compile and submit the remaining documents.”

The statement highlights the Dangote Group’s significant contributions to the national GDP, its status as the largest private sector employer, and its commitment to Nigeria’s rule of law. The group calls for understanding and patience from stakeholders and commits to keeping them informed of any further developments.
