Amidst the rising incidents of abductions and killings, particularly in the suburbs of Abuja, Defence Minister Muhammed Badaru Abubakar has called on Nigerians to cease making illegal ransom payments to kidnappers and bandits. This plea follows organised fundraising efforts by concerned citizens to support the families of victims.

Addressing the counterproductive nature of ransom payments, Minister Badaru emphasised the increased emboldening of criminals and the heightened risk of future incidents. He highlighted this point during a briefing after the Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja, where President Bola Tinubu directed security agencies to intensify efforts in rooting out perpetrators, focusing on areas bordering Kaduna and Niger states.

“Yesterday, we are aware Mr. President called us and all the service chiefs to discuss this issue. So, concerted efforts are being made by security to stop it immediately.”

The kidnappings have been concentrated around the suburbs, particularly in regions adjoining Kaduna and Niger states, where an influx of bandits from northwest and north central operations has been observed.
