The President of the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA), Mrs. Oghogho Musa, has encouraged wives of military personnel to prioritize physical exercise and self-care to maintain good health.
Speaking at the DEPOWA Monthly Aerobics and Health Walk on Saturday in Abuja, Mrs. Musa emphasized the importance of healthy eating habits and regular exercise in improving overall well-being.
She noted that a balanced diet plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy weight and reducing the risk of obesity-related diseases.
“Regular exercise is essential in managing stress, anxiety, and depression. Engaging in physical activities and hobbies that bring joy can keep us motivated and energized,” she stated.
She further urged participants to remain dedicated to healthy living practices, adding that DEPOWA plans to rotate the exercise sessions among different formations and associations to ensure wider participation.
Public health expert, Grace Ajibogwu, also addressed the gathering, highlighting the significance of adequate sleep, balanced nutrition, meditation, and regular health checkups for a healthier lifestyle.
“Women need at least seven to eight hours of sleep daily to allow the body to rest and prevent various health conditions. Sleep deprivation increases the risk of non-communicable diseases like hypertension,” Ajibogwu explained.
She further emphasized the importance of staying active, noting that physical activity lowers the risk of diseases such as diabetes and cancer.
Also speaking the President of the Nigerian Air Force Wives Association (NAFOWA), Mrs. Rakiya Abubakar, revealed that the initiative is being replicated across various units and commands.
“The impact of this monthly exercise is visible, as many women have now incorporated fitness routines into their daily lives. Some have even gone beyond the monthly sessions to maintain their exercise habits at home,” she said.
