Medical experts have confirmed that, in extremely rare cases, a woman can become pregnant while already carrying a pregnancy. The condition, known as superfetation, occurs when ovulation continues after an initial pregnancy and a second egg is fertilized, leading to the development of two embryos of different ages in the uterus.

Under normal circumstances, pregnancy hormones prevent further ovulation. In cases of superfetation, however, this process briefly fails, allowing a second conception to occur days or even weeks after the first. As a result, the two fetuses grow side by side but at different developmental stages.
Superfetation is considered exceptionally uncommon in humans and is more frequently associated with unusual hormonal patterns, assisted reproductive technologies, or delayed implantation. Most cases are discovered incidentally during routine ultrasound scans, when doctors observe noticeable differences in fetal size and growth progression.
Because of the unique risks involved, such pregnancies are closely monitored by medical teams to ensure the health and safety of both the mother and the developing fetuses. While rare, documented cases of superfetation continue to expand medical understanding of human reproduction and the complexities of pregnancy.
