Economic diversification is important requirement for development says, Don

University Don, Professor Ummu Jalingo of the department of economics Bayero University, Kano has declared that economic diversification is an important requirement for development.

Jalingo made the declaration at the first National conference of the academic staff union of Polytechnics(ASUP), Bauchi Chapter, with the theme” Insecurity, Economic Growth and Governance Triangle: Nigeria in Focus” on Tuesday in Bauchi.

“Economic diversification is an important requirement for development in the form of a trajectory that includes human development.

“Basic quality of life indices such as potable water, healthcare, nutrition, life expectancy.

“When the productive structure of an economy becomes more sophisticated, diversified and resilient,” she said

Professor Jalingo explained that there are three types of economic diversification, Gross Domestic products (GDP), economic diversification,

“Which is equally important, is trade export diversification and fiscal diversification, which involves the expansion of government fiscal revenue sources,” she said

She was represented by Dr Basiru Makarfi of Bayero University Kano aa, therefore, called on all stakeholders in the Nigeria project to do the needful with a view to reversing this pernicious trend.

Also speaking, the former Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Solomon Dalung has blamed leaders in the country for fueling the spate of insecurity in the country.

“Unless they eschew sentiments and reset their cultural values, they cannot surmount the security challenges bedevilling the nation.

He called on leadership at levels to involve the youths in national building,

“The youths have been excluded in the affairs of the nation, a development he noted has made them engage in criminal acts such as kidnapping, banditry, insurgency and other social vices,” he said.

In a remark, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State said that his administration is focusing on how to impact future generations in the state.

He said that for any state or nation to experience development, good governance is sacrosanct as there cannot be security and economic growth without it.

Represented by the Chief of staff, Dr Aminu Gamawa, said the priorities of his administration is infrastructural development which has provided jobs for the people of the state, particularly the people of the grassroots,

He Commended Polytechnics producing, manpower, information communication technology ICT expert and Infrastructural designers among others.

“The Rector of the Federal Polytechnic Bauchi, Mr Sanusi Gimau said that the choice of the theme of the conference, “Insecurity, Economic Growth and Governance Triangle: Nigeria in Focus” is apt and timely as it is coming at a time when Nigeria is being shackled by multifaceted challenges around security.

He said the effort of ASUP of the polytechnic to assemble academics across the entire technical and vocational education technology institutions is to brainstorm on the way forward in order to get the country out of the woods.
