Edo Deputy Governor Alleges Betrayal in Political Maneuvers

In a startling revelation on Tuesday, Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, opened up about feeling betrayed and duped while fervently supporting Governor Godwin Obaseki’s second-term bid.

Shaibu, a former student union leader, disclosed that he sacrificed significant political capital and personal resources to back Obaseki against the perceived godfatherism of Adams Oshiomhole, the governor’s predecessor.

Despite standing with Obaseki in opposition to Oshiomhole, whom he regarded as a father figure, Shaibu expressed shock and disappointment over the governor’s alleged support for a different gubernatorial aspirant.

The endorsement of former Sterling Bank chairman, Asue Ighodalo, by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders in Edo North, where Shaibu hails from, added fuel to the speculation that Obaseki is not supporting Shaibu’s gubernatorial ambitions.

During an appearance on Arise TV’s Morning Show, Shaibu emphasized the extent of his commitment, stating, “I lost about 20% of my political capital in Edo North to support Godwin Obaseki.” He detailed his financial contributions, including resources, vehicles, and assistance in securing the PDP ticket, only to discover that he had been allegedly deceived.

Shaibu dismissed Obaseki’s preferred candidate, insisting that Edo State cannot afford to experiment further after experiencing the governor’s tenure. He argued that the state needs someone with proven capabilities to lead effectively. Addressing concerns about his candidacy based on his geographical origin, Shaibu asserted that equity and justice should dictate the zoning of the PDP ticket to his senatorial district.

In challenging Obaseki’s choice of an outsider, Shaibu declared, “The people of Edo State do not want an outsider, and the governor is bringing an outsider, and we will resist it.” He underscored the significance of fairness and equity in the decision-making process, emphasizing that his candidacy aligns with the principles Obaseki champions.

The unfolding political drama in Edo State raises questions about loyalty, trust, and power dynamics within the ruling party as the state gears up for the next gubernatorial election.
