The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has commenced investigations into a suspected employment fraud involving a 45-year-old businesswoman, Stella Ezinne Egotanwa, who allegedly defrauded 21 people of ₦8,291,200 under the pretext of securing jobs for them at the Neuro Psychiatric Hospital, Enugu.
The EFCC disclosed this in a statement, explaining that the suspect allegedly collected money from the victims after promising to help them secure employment at the hospital but failed to fulfil the promise.
Egotanwa was arrested on July 30, 2026, by operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Anambra State following a complaint from 16 individuals who alleged that she collected ₦6,193,000 from them for the promised employment opportunities.
She was subsequently handed over to the EFCC’s Enugu Zonal Directorate on August 26, 2026, for further investigation.
During the investigation, five additional individuals submitted petitions against the suspect, alleging that she collected a total of ₦2,098,200 from them under the same employment scheme.
One of the petitioners said she paid ₦1,050,000 to the suspect on December 28, 2025, believing that the employment opportunity was genuine.
The petitioner explained that the promised job did not materialise after the payment, adding that she later experienced difficulties reaching the suspect, who allegedly stopped responding to her calls and messages at certain times.
According to the EFCC, investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly collected the total sum of ₦8,291,200 from the 21 victims between December 28, 2025, and June 30, 2026.
The Commission also alleged that she used several accounts belonging to different Point of Sale (POS) agents to receive the money.
The EFCC further disclosed that Egotanwa was already awaiting trial in another similar case involving an alleged employment scam. The suspect reportedly admitted to committing the offence during the current investigation.
The Commission said she would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
