Falconets Advance to Final Round of U-20 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers

Nigeria’s U-20 women’s team, the Falconets, have progressed to the final round of the African qualifiers for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after a 2-1 victory over Senegal women’s national under-20 football team in the return leg of their tie on Saturday evening in Diamniadio.

The win secured a 3-1 aggregate triumph for the two-time world silver medallists, who had edged the first leg 1-0 in Abeokuta. With the result, the Falconets move one step closer to the global tournament in Poland.

Nigeria began the encounter with confidence, building on their slim first-leg advantage. Their early pressure paid off in the 19th minute when Kindness Ifeanyi rose highest to head home from a corner, extending the aggregate lead and quieting the home supporters.

After the break, the Falconets maintained their structure and continued to threaten from set pieces. Their persistence yielded another goal in the 69th minute as Precious Oscar converted a well-delivered corner from Tumininu Adeshina, effectively placing the tie beyond reach.

The Senegalese side pulled one back in the 76th minute through Sokhna N.T. Pene, but the late effort proved only a consolation. Nigeria’s disciplined defence held firm in the closing stages to ensure there were no further setbacks.

The Falconets will now face Malawi women’s national under-20 football team in May, with a place at the World Cup in Poland at stake.
