FG, Borno Government Launch 2026 National Tree Planting Campaign, Environmental Retreat in Maiduguri
The Federal Ministry of Environment, in collaboration with the Borno State Government, has commenced the 2026 Top Management Retreat and National Tree Planting Campaign in Maiduguri as part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability and address the country’s growing ecological challenges.
The retreat has brought together the Governor of Borno State, the Minister of Environment, Commissioners of Environment from across the federation, environmental experts and other critical stakeholders to deliberate on pressing environmental issues confronting Nigeria.
Participants are expected to examine key issues including climate change, desertification, afforestation, biodiversity conservation and sustainable environmental management, while exploring practical strategies to strengthen environmental protection and resilience nationwide.
The organisers said the retreat provides a platform for policymakers, experts and stakeholders to exchange ideas, review existing policies and adopt innovative solutions to tackle environmental degradation across the country.
As part of the programme, the Federal Government also flagged off the 2026 National Tree Planting Campaign, an initiative designed to promote afforestation, restore degraded lands, combat desertification and mitigate the effects of climate change.
The campaign also seeks to encourage Nigerians to actively participate in environmental conservation by planting and nurturing trees as part of collective efforts to protect the environment for present and future generations.
The Ministry said the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s commitment to promoting sustainable environmental management and building climate resilience through stronger collaboration with state governments and relevant stakeholders.
