FG Receives Nigerians Rescued from Côte d’Ivoire Prison

The Federal Government has received five young Nigerians who were recently rescued from detention at the MACA Prison in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, following diplomatic intervention.

The returnees were received on Tuesday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, alongside the Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, and other government officials.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Nigerians had been detained at the prison since August 2025 before the Federal Government secured their release through diplomatic efforts.

The returnees were identified as Aliyu Malami, Nasiru Umar, Shamsu Abubakar, Sa’adu Bello, Lyman Mohammed and Usama Murtala. They had travelled by road from Sokoto to Abidjan on a trading trip before they were arrested and detained without charge or trial.

The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of Nigerians abroad, pledging to continue engaging with foreign governments to ensure the safety and fair treatment of its citizens overseas.
