FIRS Boss Tasks Media on Promoting Voluntary Tax Compliance
By Matthew Eloyi
The Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Dr. Zacch Adedeji, has urged media practitioners to take up a stronger role in fostering a culture of voluntary tax compliance across Nigeria.
Adedeji, represented by his Technical Assistant on Broadcast Media, Arabinrin Aderonke, made the call on Wednesday in Kaduna during a one-day media sensitisation and enlightenment programme themed “The Role of Media in Voluntary Tax Compliance.”
He described the media as a “watchdog, educator, and bridge” between government and citizens, stressing that their involvement is crucial to building trust and promoting responsible citizenship.
“It gives me great joy to welcome you to this sensitisation programme. By being here today, you have shown your commitment to building a Nigeria where responsibility and accountability go hand in hand,” he said.
The FIRS Chairman explained that taxation remains a key pillar of national development, making it possible for essential services such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, and social welfare to be delivered to Nigerians.
He, however, lamented the gap in public understanding and perception of taxation, noting that the media can help bridge it.
“Many people still see taxes as a burden or punishment rather than as a civic duty. What we need is a culture of voluntary compliance where citizens willingly pay taxes because they understand the benefits and trust the system,” Adedeji said.
According to him, the media must simplify tax information, promote dialogue, and hold institutions accountable in order to boost public confidence in the tax system.
“The media has always been a good messenger. It is an educator, a watchdog, and a bridge between government and the people. When journalists simplify complex tax laws and procedures, they empower citizens with knowledge,” he added.
In his technical presentation, Mr. Mohammed Adamu defined voluntary tax compliance as the willingness of taxpayers to declare income accurately, maintain proper records, file returns, and pay taxes without enforcement pressure. He said such compliance reduces enforcement costs, strengthens trust, and fosters national development.
“Voluntary tax compliance is not just a legal duty; it is a patriotic act and a demonstration of faith in the nation,” Adamu stated.
Also speaking, Mr. Ishaku Ankama, Senior Manager at the Kaduna FIRS Government Business Office, stressed that voluntary compliance is critical to social stability and economic growth.
“Paying taxes as and when due is the only path to a better tax system and a prosperous economy,” he said.
Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kaduna State Council, Alhaji Abdulgafar Alabelewe, commended FIRS for the capacity-building initiative and pledged journalists’ support in enlightening the public on the importance of tax compliance.
The sensitisation programme, which brought together stakeholders, tax professionals, and media representatives, ended with a commitment to deepen collaboration between the media and tax authorities for effective tax messaging and greater civic engagement.
