A former student of the University of Surrey has been charged with attempted murder following a crossbow attack that left a university staff member seriously injured.
The suspect, identified as Almunthir Daqamah, a 21-year-old Saudi national, was arrested after the incident at the university’s Manor Park Student Village in Guildford on Thursday.
According to police, officers responded to reports of a man being shot with a crossbow at about 10 a.m. The victim, a man in his 50s and a member of the university’s campus safety team, sustained serious injuries during the attack.
Authorities said the injured staff member is currently in a stable condition in hospital, while support is being provided to his family.
Daqamah has been charged with attempted murder, possession of an offensive weapon, two counts of possession of a bladed article, and possession of Class B drugs. He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear before Guildford Magistrates’ Court.
Police stated that investigations so far indicate the incident was not terror-related and confirmed that they are not seeking any additional suspects in connection with the case.
Speaking on the incident, Jon Groenen said officers were working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the attack.
“We know how concerning this incident is, both for the university community and for local residents in Guildford. There is nothing to suggest this incident is terror-related and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with it,” he said.
The police chief also appealed to members of the public with information about the incident to come forward.
In a statement, the University of Surrey expressed relief that the injured staff member was recovering and praised the response of its campus safety team.
“We have been informed that our colleague is now in a stable condition and our entire community is relieved to hear this news. We wish him a full and speedy recovery,” a university spokesperson said.
The institution also commended its campus safety personnel for responding with professionalism and courage during the incident.
Despite the attack, the university confirmed that its campus remains fully open and operational.
