From India to Sweden on a Bicycle: The Extraordinary Love Journey of P.K. Mahanandia

One of the world’s most remarkable real-life love stories belongs to Pradyumna Kumar Mahanandia, popularly known as P.K. Mahanandia, an Indian artist who cycled thousands of kilometres across continents in the late 1970s to reunite with the woman he loved.

Born in 1949 in Kandhapada village, Odisha, India, Mahanandia grew up in a humble family and discovered his talent for art at an early age. Despite financial hardship, he pursued his passion and later studied at the College of Art, New Delhi, where he earned recognition as a gifted portrait artist.

In 1975, his life changed forever when Charlotte von Schedvin, a young woman from Sweden, visited India during her travels. Fascinated by his artistic reputation, she asked him to paint her portrait.

Although several attempts were needed before he was satisfied with the painting, the time they spent together blossomed into a deep friendship and eventually love.

Charlotte later travelled with Mahanandia to his home village in Odisha, where the couple married in a traditional tribal ceremony according to local customs. However, after the wedding, Charlotte returned to Sweden, while Mahanandia remained in India due to financial constraints.

Determined not to let distance end their love story, Mahanandia made an extraordinary decision. In 1977, he sold most of his belongings, bought a second-hand bicycle, and set off on a journey of nearly 6,000 kilometres from India to Sweden.

Travelling through countries including Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia (now several countries), Germany, Austria and Denmark before reaching Sweden, he relied on his artistic skills to survive. Along the way, he painted portraits to earn money for food, accommodation and repairs to his bicycle.

After months of travelling across Asia and Europe under difficult conditions, Mahanandia finally arrived in Sweden, where he reunited with Charlotte.

The couple later settled in Sweden, built a family together and remained happily married for decades. Mahanandia continued his career as an internationally recognised artist, with his works exhibited across Europe and other parts of the world.

Their remarkable journey has become an enduring symbol of perseverance, sacrifice and unconditional love, inspiring people around the globe. More than four decades later, the story of P.K. Mahanandia’s bicycle journey remains one of history’s most extraordinary examples of how determination and love can overcome even the greatest distances.
