From Tea Gardens to National Honour: Nurse Gita Karmakar’s Four Decades of Lifesaving Service Earns Florence Nightingale Award

For more than 40 years, Gita Karmakar, a dedicated nurse from India’s eastern state of West Bengal, devoted her life to improving maternal and child healthcare in some of the country’s most remote tea garden communities, earning national recognition for her extraordinary service.

Karmakar joined the West Bengal Health Department in 1983 and was posted to the Danguajhar Tea Garden in Jalpaiguri district, a rural area where access to healthcare was extremely limited. Upon arriving, she discovered that most women delivered their babies at home without skilled medical assistance, while hospitals and emergency healthcare facilities were often many kilometres away.

Determined to reduce maternal and infant deaths, she began travelling 12 to 14 kilometres every day on a bicycle, visiting isolated villages and tea garden settlements to provide antenatal care, assist expectant mothers, educate families on safe childbirth practices and ensure newborns received proper medical attention.

Her commitment continued uninterrupted for decades despite difficult terrain, harsh weather and limited resources. She became a trusted figure in the communities she served, helping thousands of women access safer pregnancies and deliveries while promoting immunisation, family health education and maternal care.

In 2008, Karmakar’s dedication came at a personal cost when she was involved in a road accident during one of her field visits, leaving her with 40 per cent permanent physical disability. Despite the injury, she refused to abandon her work and continued serving rural communities with the same determination and compassion that had defined her career.

Her tireless efforts significantly strengthened maternal healthcare delivery across the tea garden communities of Jalpaiguri, where many families relied on her as their primary healthcare provider for decades.

In recognition of her exceptional contribution to nursing and public health, President Droupadi Murmu conferred on Gita Karmakar the prestigious National Florence Nightingale Award, India’s highest honour for nursing professionals.

Named after Florence Nightingale, the pioneer of modern nursing, the award recognises nurses who have demonstrated outstanding service, dedication and commitment to healthcare.

Gita Karmakar’s remarkable journey—from cycling through remote tea gardens to becoming one of India’s most honoured nurses—stands as a powerful testament to compassion, resilience and selfless service, inspiring healthcare professionals across the country and beyond.
