The visit, which took place on Friday, March 27, 2026, was organised under the six-month Intensive Officers’ Course at the Gambia Armed Forces Training School. The cohort, made up of 27 participants, undertook the tour to deepen their understanding of the country’s military heritage and the historical significance of the cemetery.
The Fajara War Cemetery serves as the final resting place for soldiers and airmen who lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars between 1939 and 1945.
The exercise began with the playing of the national anthem, followed by prayers led by an imam and a chaplain in honour of fallen heroes. The study tour forms part of a broader series of field activities designed to produce well-rounded military leaders with both tactical expertise and a strong sense of historical awareness.
During the visit, the cemetery’s custodian, Sahiou Sanyang, briefed the cadets on the history of the site, including the relocation of remains of fallen soldiers from Banjul to the current cemetery during the Second Republic.
The delegation was led by Chief Instructor Captain Saikou Jarju and Training Officer Lieutenant Ebrima Gaye. Also present were instructors, religious leaders, and members of the GAF Directorate of Public Relations, who documented the exercise.
Military authorities noted that similar educational visits to other historical sites across The Gambia are planned in the coming days as part of the officers’ training curriculum.
