Yobe State Governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, CON, COMN, has charged permanent secretaries in the state to justify the confidence reposed in them by the government by improving service delivery and putting in their best to serve the people.
The governor gave the charge in Damaturu when representatives of the permanent secretaries paid him a thank-you visit over the recent upward review of their salaries.
Buni explained that the government had invested heavily in training civil servants to fill the gaps created by the retirement of experienced officers, ensure continuity in the civil service and improve service delivery.
He urged the permanent secretaries to lead by example, noting that younger civil servants look up to them for guidance and leadership.
“You are the role models of the younger civil servants working under you, so you should lead by example. The government reviewed your salaries to improve your welfare and reflect the growing responsibilities that come with your offices.
“It is said that to whom much is given, much is equally expected. You should therefore justify this gesture by putting in your best to serve our people better,” Buni said.
Earlier, the state Head of Service, Alhaji Abdullahi Musa, said the permanent secretaries decided to visit the governor to express their appreciation for the salary review.
He explained that permanent secretaries in the state had been on the same salary structure since 2006, adding that previous efforts to review it had not been successful until the present administration.
“Your Excellency, you have made Yobe permanent secretaries role models for permanent secretaries in other states. Thank you, sir,” Musa said.
He assured the governor that the permanent secretaries would justify the gesture to the best of their ability for the benefit of the state and its people.
Buni Congratulates Over 400 Scholars on Graduation
In a related development, Governor Buni has congratulated over 400 graduates sponsored by the Yobe State Government to study at universities in India under the Buni Scholars programme.
The graduates, who completed studies in various health-related and engineering courses, visited the governor to express their appreciation for the opportunity provided by the state government.
Speaking on behalf of the graduates, Fatima Kolo said the sponsorship had given them a rare opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills that would benefit them individually and contribute to the development of the state.
“Thank you, Your Excellency, our governor, for giving us this opportunity at the very beginning of our lives. We assure you that we will uphold this legacy and give back to the state,” she said.
Responding, Buni congratulated the graduates on their successful completion of studies and commended them for being good ambassadors of Yobe State.
“You have done us proud with your successful graduation and by not dragging the name of the state into shame and disgrace,” the governor said.
He urged them to serve the state effectively and efficiently, stressing the need for them to justify the government’s investment and sponsorship in their education.
Buni also encouraged the graduates to use the knowledge and skills they had acquired to contribute to the development of Yobe State and improve the lives of its people.
