I will Dance Like David—But Not Like the World!

Jerry Adesewo

I am furious. As a believer who treasures genuine worship, I can no longer stay silent about what’s happening in our churches. Sacred dance—once a powerful expression of devotion—is being replaced by something carnal, sensual, and utterly worldly. And the most shocking part? Even the world is calling it out!

Recently, a viral TikTok video exposed what many of us have been witnessing for years: women in church “twerking,” gyrating, and dancing in ways that belong in a nightclub, not the house of God. The woman in the video, clearly disturbed, asked: “Since when did this become acceptable in church?” If even unbelievers are appalled, why aren’t we?

David Danced Before the Lord—Not for the Crowd

When David danced before the Ark of the Covenant, his worship was raw, unfiltered, and entirely for God (2 Samuel 6:14). He didn’t move to impress onlookers or stir fleshly desires—he was lost in holy abandon. When Michal mocked him, his response was fierce:

“I will celebrate before the Lord… I will become even more undignified than this!” (2 Samuel 6:21-22)

David’s worship was “undignified, but never unholy”. His dance was ‘free, but never fleshly’. Can we say the same about what’s happening in churches today?

The Church’s Dance Floor: Worship or Worldliness?

Walk into many churches now, and you’ll find:

– Twerking in the aisles – Movements that mimic secular clubs rather than exalt Christ.

– Performance over presence – Choreographed routines that draw eyes to dancers instead of God.

– Cultural compromise – Leaders allowing worldly trends in the name of “relevance,” while holiness is abandoned.

If a ‘secular‘ woman can see the problem, why can’t the Church? When the world looks at our “worship” and calls it inappropriate, we have lost our distinction.

A Prophetic Warning to Church Leaders

This isn’t about banning dance—it’s about returning to biblical standards. Church leaders must ask:

1. Does this honour God or entertain man? – If the dance could fit in a nightclub, it doesn’t belong in church.

2. Does it stir the Spirit or the flesh? – Sensuality has no place in worship (Galatians 5:19-21).

3. Are we fearing man or God? – If we’re more afraid of being called “prudish” than grieving the Holy Spirit, we’ve already compromised.

A Call to Holy Rebellion

I refuse to let the world—or carnal believers—redefine worship. Like David, I will dance before the Lord with abandon, but I will not dance like the world. If that makes me “undignified,” so be it—but let it be for God’s glory, not man’s applause.

The world is watching. The Spirit is grieved. The Church must repent. If our worship doesn’t offend the Michals of this age, it’s likely because we’re no longer dancing for the Lord—but for the crowd.
