Indian ultra-runner Sufiya Sufi has etched her name in the history of endurance sports after completing one of the most challenging long-distance running journeys in the world — becoming the fastest female runner to cover the distance from Kanyakumari, the southernmost tip of India, to Kashmir in the north.
Sufiya completed the extraordinary 4,167-kilometre journey in 68 days, 23 hours, running across some of India’s most diverse and demanding terrains. Her record-breaking feat was dedicated to the Indian Armed Forces, as a tribute to their service, sacrifice and commitment to protecting the nation.
Born in Rajasthan, India, Sufiya’s journey into endurance running was not one that began with a traditional athletic background. Before becoming a globally recognised ultra-runner, she worked as a commercial pilot with IndiGo Airlines. Her life changed when she discovered long-distance running and found a passion for pushing the limits of human endurance.
She began her professional running journey in 2018, after taking up running as a personal challenge. What started as a fitness activity soon developed into a mission to inspire people through extreme endurance challenges.
In 2018, Sufiya completed her first major ultra-running challenge, running from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, covering approximately 4,000 kilometres. The achievement established her as one of India’s most determined endurance athletes.
She later undertook several record-breaking expeditions, including the Golden Quadrilateral Run, where she covered more than 6,000 kilometres around India’s major highways, becoming the first woman to complete the route on foot. She also completed international endurance challenges, including long-distance runs across countries and continents, further strengthening her reputation as an ultra-endurance athlete.
For her Kanyakumari-to-Kashmir record attempt, Sufiya faced extreme weather conditions, including intense heat, heavy rainfall, difficult roads, physical exhaustion and demanding mountain routes. Despite injuries, fatigue and numerous challenges along the way, she continued moving forward with determination and discipline.
Her historic run highlighted not only physical strength but also mental resilience, proving that consistency, courage and self-belief can overcome extraordinary obstacles.
Beyond breaking records, Sufiya Sufi has become an inspiration for aspiring athletes, especially women, encouraging them to challenge limitations and pursue ambitious goals.
Her journey represents the power of determination — showing that ordinary beginnings can lead to extraordinary achievements when driven by passion, discipline and an unwavering spirit.
